Burrrr!

The Northeastern United States blizzard of 1978 was a catastrophic and historic nor'easter that brought blizzard conditions to the New England region of the United States and the New York metropolitan area. The Blizzard of 1978 formed on February 5, 1978 and broke up on February 7, 1978.  Snowfall occurred primarily between Monday morning, February 6 and the evening of Tuesday, February 7. Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts were particularly hard hit by this storm.
Boston received a record 27.1 inches (69 cm) of snow, as did Providence, Rhode Island with 27.6 inches (70 cm) of snow. The storm killed approximately 100 people in the Northeast and injured around 4,500. The storm also caused over US$520 million (US$1.75 billion in present terms) in damage.

Express your feelings towards this event as if it had occured to you. How do you think Elizaabeth City would be affected?, Do you think it would have been more intense if it were to occur here?

  1. I actually believe this would have been more intense if it were to happen here in Elizabeth City, for the simple fact that we have low land. If this were to occur here I would probably be devastated, cold, and hungry because most likely there would be no heat because of power outages. However, I'm glad that this event has not occurred here because I don't think we could actually handle the cost for damages that could occur.

  2. I would be devestated if that event happened to me. It would have caused more damage here in Elizabeth city. I say that because our buildings arn't built for blizzards and we wouldn't know what to do, since we don't get blizzards.

  3. It would have been very bad if this storm had hit Elizabeth city. I say this because our city is not use to all that snow. Afterwards it would flood really bad because of the low land. I think it would have been more intense here because this is a small city and it could easily be demolished by a snow storm.

  4. To be honest, if something like this were to ever happen to little ol' Elizabeth City, the town wouldn't be on the map no more. One reason I say that is because we already can not take snow. If there is a chance of snow on the weather forecast, school will either be delayed or cancelled. So if a blizzard like that were to occur, we would be very pitiful. I believe that if it were to occur here it wouldv'e been way more intense. Me saying that is because the city is already small, all of that snow will be piled up for a long time. For those who experienced the blizzard I feel very sorry for them. Those cities had snow that was 25 or more inches high!

  5. If a storm like that hit Elizabeth City we would be in alot of trouble! For one were not used to more than an inch of snow here and there so a huge blizzard like that would be horrible! This would probably be more intense here because this small town would be demolished by all that snow!!

  6. I think that if a blizzard like that occured here in Elizabeth City, everyone would be in shock and have no idea what to do. I don't mind a little bit of snow because we barely ever get it but I think that if we got that much, everyone would be sick of snow! This would cause problems here because our city isn't build to withstand snow. We would have the problem of frozen streets for weeks because we don't have snow plows. Also, we would flood very badly because of the river. I think that if it snowed that much, the only cool thing would be that we could ice skate on the river because it would freeze!

  7. I think that if this terrible event were to happen here in Elizabeth City that it would be much worse because the people, building and animals don't know how to react to this type of weather. The storm would easily cause many power outages, hunger and no heat for anyone making some people even fight for their lives and family. I would not want to experience this event!

  8. If this blizzard hit Elizabeth City probably most of the city would be destroyed. I would go to the store, buy all of the canned goods, bottled water, blankets, and propane tanks that I could fit into my car. I dont think that Elizabeth City could afford the 1.75 billion dollars worth of damage...

  9. If this had happened in Elizabeth City, I believe that the storm would have been much worse. Here we have low, flat land, and very short buildings. This could give the wind and snow open area to place to cover land. This is an area not used to heavy snowfall, and our houses are not prepped for it. The roofs might collapse, and as a city we would not have the money for repairs on public buildings.

  10. I think it would have been very extreme if it had happened here. Our town isn't well prepared for that much snow, and probably isn't built for it. Roofs would collapse and people would die. It would be horrible if that occured to me. I would be scared and would probably never go out in snow again.

  11. I couldn't imagine having to go through this natural disater. If this storm hit Elizabeth City it would have been terrible, we wouldnt have the money to rebuild buildings and structures and it would drepress the area. With no food or power none of the big cooperations could run their business like the Coast Guard Base, DRS, and T-com, which would have a big affect on our little town.

  12. I couldnt imagine what a disaster like that would be like. I think that it would be worse in Elizabeth City for the simple fact that our town is so small. It would be hard to pay for all the damage that the storm would cause.

  13. I think that if it had hit here people would have freaked out. Typically people think school should be cancelled for like an inch of snow so a blizzard would probably cause a mass chaos. Our buildings aren't built for so much snow to hit and we would probably have even more casualties then there originally were just because of that. If I had been a part of it I might not have been as scared as I should've just because I love snow and watching it fall so I might have been a little unworried, but it's still something that would take serious thought about. I think that I would be scared once I realized the trouble it was causing though.

  15. It would have been a horrific event if that snowstorm hit Elizabeth City. I believe that it would have had more devestation on us than the victims of Katrina. I say that because New Oreleans is a place that recieves a lot of tourism. The businesses that were able to survive had a chance to get back on their feet. Since Elizabeth City is small, and many people do not plan to come here, our entire community would be destroyed. Although I realize that our community would not recieve as much aide, because of our small size, I believe that funds given to us would be substantially low. If something like this were to occur, I would be scared for our lives and our survival.

  16. Experience an event such as this would have that little mixed feeling effect. Stupidly curious, to see what were the effects of this. If it were to hit the city of Elizabeth City it would be even more devastating that if it hit Boston or Providence. Think about how far south we are compared to Boston and Providence. Those were hit were not completely prepared for this event, but they would've been far ahead of us. Because of close we are to the beach, you wouldn't think to prepare for a blizzard!
